Charmaine Chan (Hong Kong, b. 2002) is a graphic designer who is curious about the influence of culture and separation of people. Chan’s work explores the cracks between personal and societal relationships, expressing the breakage of communication and uniting the audience through interactive and self-perpetuating work.
Currently finishing her last semester at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Chan is majoring with a BFA in Graphic Design. Her attention to detail and close observations of society motivates her to continue her interest in exploring design within the professional field. Chan’s thesis work, titled Foreign Bodies, explores how language barriers intrude upon intrapersonal relationships. She expresses how these barriers, in their disparate nature, hold further authority over broad societal worldviews and conjunctions between cultures. Chan’s disruptive type treatment serves as a visualisation of her navigation amidst the resultant exclusionary systems.
